Celebrate Restore Share
The Hungry Guest’s story is profoundly linked to the surrounding area and wholeheartedly invites you to celebrate and share its passion for good food and wine.
Obsessed with returning to seasonal, locally available, fresh and artisanal food The Hungry Guest puts the market back into a market town. We work with carefully selected growers and producers who align with our ethics and values and who help us in our delivery of excellence.
Our Artisan Bakery and production kitchen is nestled in the glorious South Downs and is trusted to produce only the finest selection of preservative free breads, pastries and ambient goods which adorn the shelves of our food shop and are served in our cafes both in historic Petworth and wonderful West Malling.
Provenance as well as quality is at the heart of our values and our butchery is no exception. Grass and seaweed fed cattle, rare breed pigs, wild shot venison and game, slow grown chickens are all carefully selected by us to ensure the best flavour and highest standards of traceability.
We are passionate about living in harmony with the natural world and of the benefits to our health we reap through the production and consumption of sustainable and nutritious food.
Create nurture cultivate
Our community matters to us.
We have created local jobs and employed local traders to build, restore and maintain our food shop and cafes. Over the years we have run apprenticeship schemes at the butchery, supporting young, part-time schoolboys into master butchers, a barista with a penchant for numbers into a fully qualified accountant and a waitress into a cafe manager.
We are proud to have recently started our own Management Development Programme where we identify promising young managers and give them the opportunity to spend a year working in each key area of the business including hands on experience with our artisan bakers and producers whose craft and passion symbolise the heart of our business.
Support inspire educate
The Hungry Guest has supported over 50 different local charities and community projects over the last eight years, including local sports clubs, food banks, hospices, the homeless, kindergartens, community fetes and the Church.
In West Malling our chosen charity for 2019/20 is the Heart of Kent Hospice and our team is looking forward to working with them on various fundraising events.
Our place in heritage communities is important to us and we are proud to support the wonderful Petworth Festival each year.
Education and inspiration are the drivers behind our involvement in the innovative programme “Be the Change,” a mentoring programme aimed at young people in year 9 who have become disengaged at school or lack confidence in their own abilities but who show real potential once they are engaged and inspired by positive role models. Members of our team are given time out of work to mentor and inspire these young people and support them on their journey.
