At the beginning of each year BBC Radio 4 launch their annual Food & Farming Awards. They were originally launched back in 2000 to mark the 20th anniversary of Radio 4’s The Food Programme.
Their mission statement then (which remains true to this day) was “to honour those who have done most to promote the cause of good food”.
Good food is the overlying ethos behind everything we do and offer at The Hungry Guest and our Petworth food shop is testament to that. That’s why we would really appreciate your support in nominating us in the You and Yours Best Food Retailer category.
This category however is not only about great quality food. The judges are also looking for a shop that enriches the lives of those that visit, the local high street and community.
Our mission is to evoke passion and appreciation in all our customers and visitors through our dedication to sourcing fresh, local produce wherever possible as well as supplying renowned artisan products at accessible prices to excite every taste bud. We stand for more than simply great tasting food – it’s built on a long-standing philosophy of the value of good food. The passion of our production kitchen is what gives life to our products and ties together the unique network between the fabulous local growers, our very talented chefs behind the scenes, and the people, who share in the end result.
Our team go to great lengths to source our products from quality, sustainable suppliers but more uniquely we also make so many of our own products, by hand in our own kitchens. From curry and pasta sauces, jams and marmalades, fresh pesto and tapenades to our great value everyday ready meals. These are all made by us. We even smoke some our own fish! And of course, lets not forget our bread!
Since opening the shop our artisan bakery has been the heart of what we do gaining a reputation that stretches the length and breadth of Britain judging by the comments we receive! Every loaf is handmade, naturally fermented using traditional methods and uses only the basic ingredients. Flour, water, salt and sometimes yeast but no additives or preservatives. The past 4 years have seen us win at both the Gold Taste Awards and World Bread Awards.
It takes quite a team to deliver on our promise of good food and we employ over 30 people from the local area to make this happen. Chefs, bakers, cheesemongers, retail assistants and butchers too. In fact, we are so committed to ensuring our meat is not only responsibly sourced, great tasting and butchered in house that we launched an apprentice scheme in 2014 so we can nurture and train the next generation of butchers.
We are constantly striving to challenge and inspire our employees and provide regular training courses to instill confidence, encouragement and excitement in everything that we do. It is imperative that all our staff members are familiar with all the products we source as well as produce.
As well as our staff, as a small, local business it is incredibly important for us to be involved in the community. Along with regular tasting and seasonal events, we contribute to local initiatives, schools and charities.
So as you can see, we put all of our efforts into ensuring we champion and promote the cause of good food. That’s why we would really love to win this years BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Award for retailer of the year, but to do that we need your help. Please nominate us here.
Nominations for 2016 are now open and will close at midnight on Sunday 24th January.
