Scotch Eggs, so very British and so very delicious. Picture a sunny summers day, a light breeze in the air, a picnic blanket rolled out in your favourite spot, perhaps on the beach or in a park. Now picture an array of snacks and treats in front of you and at the very centre a freshly made Scotch egg, waiting to be eaten whole of sliced in half and shared. Hungry?
We are lucky to have our own butchery in our food shop who source our pork from Scott Free Range near Storrington. Our eggs come from Hallgate Farm, a small free range farm which can be reached on foot from our shop. The two key ingredients to the perfect scotch egg.
Every week Simon, one of the chefs in our Petworth cafe makes a fresh batch which are sold through our food shop in Middle Street, Petworth. They are also about to make an appearance on our new cafe summer menu, served with piccalilli and salad leaves.
We went behind the scenes with Simon and watched him make a batch. As you will see it is all done by hand in small batches (on a busy day he will make 60 which is time consuming but the results speak for themselves). Simon makes four varieties, traditional, curry and chilli as well as a quails egg version.
If you are really lucky to be in the shop when a fresh delivery is made then you will find they are still warm. Once you have tasted one of our freshly cooked scotch eggs anything else will seem inferior….
