It is well documented how much we love our bread at The Hungry Guest and the awards we have won since launching the bakery are testament to the care & effort that goes into producing each & every loaf.
Our bakers make over 30 types of loaves & rolls on a daily basis, all made by hand and using the sour dough fermentation method to ensure we produce the maximum amount of flavour. One of our favourite loaves is our Raisin & Seed bread.
It’s made using a mixture of four different flours including wholemeal and Maltstar flours from Canns Mill in Dorset. The mixture of five different seeds; pumpkin, sunflower, linseed, sesame & poppy is soaked first along with juicy, plump Californian raisins. By allowing them to soak in water they do not dry out when baked ensuring a moist consistency.
The seed & raisin mix is then added to the dough before being allowed to prove. Each of our loaves are weighed and shaped by hand & another ingredient that makes our raisin & seed loaf taste extra special are the oats that each loaf is rolled in before being baked.
One of the best features of this bread is just how versatile it is but everyone seems to have a favourite way of serving it. We certainly recommend a toasted slice or two, served with unsalted butter & a cup of tea. Equally satisfying for breakfast, elevenses’ or even an afternoon snack.
It is also a fantastic companion for a cheese board & pairs extremely well with creamy cheeses such as a Brix de Meaux or a Goats cheese such as Ragstone, both of which can be found in the cheese room of our Petworth shop.
