Summer at Mereworth Market Gardens – Grown for Flavour
It’s a beautiful time at Mereworth Market Garden and the Market Gardeners have been busy working on a range of delicious seasonal produce which we are fortunate to see filling the shelves of The Hungry Guest Food Shops as well as the menus of sister restaurants E. Street Bar & Grill and The Angel Inn in Petworth. Here’s an update from Head Market Gardener Paul on all things Mereworth and what other exciting produce is on its way:
As we are entering Summer and the soil has finally warmed up, much of the activity in the market garden is spent planting up the outdoor crops, using up all the plants that we’ve spent a lot of time waiting for in our propagation unit. Even the Winter crops, from leeks to brussel sprouts, cabbages and coulis need to be planted into their final positions.
The heritage tomatoes, peppers and aubergines in the tunnels have established well, but we still have to wait until around July before we get to harvest these. We are now enjoying the soft fruits, the strawberries, blueberries, hybrid berries and fresh, green garlic. Our strawberries are the star of the show, planting an assortment of rare and unusual strawberry varieties, picked for flavour.
