Friday 17th May is World Baking Day!
Nestled in the glorious South Downs, our Artisan Bakery and production kitchen produces the breads, pastries and ambient goods which adorn the shelves of our food shop and are served in our cafes both in historic Petworth and wonderful West Malling. We make all our own baked goods from scratch in our Artisan Bakery near Chichester, where each loaf is hand formed and crafted using traditional methods.
To mark the occasion, we caught up with our team at Temple Bar, who work tirelessly to bake and produce an incredible array of delicious handmade baked goods.
How many loaves of bread are made at The Hungry Guest Bakery every week?
Approximately 1,750 loaves are produced every week. Our Pain D’Alsace ¼ is the most popular and we produce over 250 of these each week.
What is your most popular bakery item?
Our cheese straws and cinnamon buns are amongst the most popular. We make over 750 of these every month.
How many tons of flour are used per week?
We use around 1 tonne of flour a week, and of that roughly half of that is Shipton Mill’s Canadian flour which is particularly well suited to our long fermentation breads thanks to the strength of the wheat protein in the flour.
How large is the team producing the items we enjoy at The Hungry Guest?
We have a team of three bakers, and we also have team members including admin, packers, and drivers who all play vital roles in us being able to produce and deliver our products around the South East of England.
As it’s one of the most popular items, how many of our Great Taste Award winning brownies were sold last year?
We sold over 800 chocolate brownies last year, which works out as 4 tonnes of brownie mix. We used 1 tonne of chocolate, over 15,000 eggs, and more than 1,250kg of sugar to make these brownies.
When do you start making your seasonal items for Christmas?
Production of our Christmas puddings starts in July along with mincemeat for our mince pies. Production really takes off at the end of October as we build our stock for the festive season.
What are some of the teams favourite products to make?
Lamingtons, cinnamon buns, millionaire shortbread, carrot cake.
